Abortions of teenage girls without parental consent – Denmark wants to lower the age limit

OUR Denmark wants to reduce from the current 18 years to 15 the age at which a young woman can pass abortion without the consent of her guardians, Gender Equality Minister Marie Bière announced today.

The government announced its decision to support the proposal on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the law giving women the right to choose abortion. Denmark was one of the first Western European countries to legalize abortion in 1973. Previously, abortion had to be approved by a doctor.

Young women under 18 are allowed to have an abortion, but only with parental consent.

“Abortion can cause a lot of emotions, feelings of guilt and shame. Asking for parental consent for children under 18 can be embarrassing and have serious consequences,” Biere tweeted. “We want to change this so that young women can choose whether or not to involve their parents in the process,” she added.
