Elections: Crete “wears” blue, “prefers” green

OUR Crete in “blue” it is definitely an impressive element election campaign Sundays since on the island SW not seen the first in recent decades. However, at the second level, the data shows that the Cretans may not have moved as far to the right as shown on the election map. Percentages show that ND ranked first, o SYRIZA lost a lot, but PASOK this is a party that fifteen years later – s.s. Crete was green in 2009 – looks like it’s back to Cretan preference.

Characteristics, PASOK as a whole in Crete scored 19% and took third place. but with a difference of 2.5 points from SYRIZA, which collected 21.5%. Also in two of the four prefectures, Rethymno and Lassithi, it came in second, even outstripping SYRIZA by a single thread, while adding up the percentages of SYRIZA and PASOK by prefecture, the forces of the central left remain dominant on the island. It is also worth noting that the smaller parties did not receive the interest from the collapse of SYRIZA that they received in the rest of Greece.

However, it is characteristic that SYRIZA retained its strength and retained its first place in urban centers, which local government officials attribute to the fact that a significant part of the population in Rethymnon, Heraklion, Chania And Lasithi is civil servantspart of society in which SYRIZA occupies a significant place.

From 4 prefectures Rethymnon ND took first place mainly due to the collapse of SYRIZA, as in practice it increased its percentage by only 0.55% (1074 votes more than in 2019), while the electoral power of SYRIZA decreased by 15.96% . PASOK rose to 21.47% from 9.82% in 2019.

As a result, Polakis failed to rally the voters of SYRIZA, as can be seen from the election results. For example, in Sfakia, 840 people voted for ND and 719 for SYRIZA. “Polakis rallied his constituents, but alienated many with his demeanor. He won the votes himself, but perhaps SYRIZA lost the votes,” the local government official believes.
