
Former finance minister Darius Valkov, who came under international investigation after he was sentenced to six years in prison for influence peddling and money laundering, turned himself in at a police station in Naples, the Italian press writes.
According to Corriere del Mezzogiorno, on May 3, an international arrest warrant was issued for him by the judicial authorities of his country of origin, Romania.
A 46-year-old man surrendered a few hours ago at the Portici-Ercolano police station. It is about Darius Bohdan Valtsov, a Romanian politician and economist, member of the Democratic Party and former Minister of Finance, according to News.ro.
A European arrest warrant was issued in his name at the beginning of the month, Valkov is to serve six years in prison. The politician contacted the police and then surrendered at the police station in Portici. Currently, the reason for his presence in the Neapolitan area is unknown.

Darius Valkov was finally sentenced on Tuesday by the Supreme Court to six years in prison in a case in which he was sent to trial in May 2015 and in which he was sentenced at first instance to eight years in prison.
In this case, in February 2018, a three-judge panel of the Supreme Court sentenced Darius Valkov to eight years in prison with execution. The trial was suspended for almost two and a half years.
In 2015, Valtsov was sent to court in this case. During the searches, prosecutors found a real treasure – more than 1.3 million lei, 90 thousand euros, three gold bars weighing three kilograms and three paintings with inscriptions by Renoir, Jean Cocteau and Aurel Acassandri, respectively.
In total, 172 paintings purchased by Valkov through intermediaries were discovered during the searches, some of them were hidden in false walls of buildings belonging to the former minister.
The Supreme Court of Cassation and Justice decided to partially cancel the decision of the first instance and to reduce the sentence in the form of 8 years of imprisonment to the components: 3 years of imprisonment for abuse of influence, 5 years of imprisonment for money laundering.
“(…) Consolidate the punishments established by this decision and apply to the accused Valtsov Daria Bohdan the most severe punishment, 5 years of imprisonment, to which he adds an increase of 1 year of imprisonment, which is a third of the total amount. the other 3 years in prison, this is going to carry out, in the end, a sentence of 6 years in prison.”

The magistrates left unchanged the decision to confiscate the sum of 6.2 million lei from Valkov.
Minel Prina, the former mayor of the municipality of Slatin, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison by firing squad, and Lucian Petruc Shusala, the former driver of Darius Valkov, to 2 years suspended with a 5-year supervision period. Petre Bohdan Timofte was sentenced to 3 years by firing squad, and Konstantin Tomescu was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months by firing squad.
The Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday is final.
