Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday sharply criticized some Western media outlets that he believes have recently tried to influence public opinion with their headlines about the Turkish elections.
In an interview with TRT Haber, the 69-year-old Erdogan claimed that the West was concerned about the development of the Turkish defense industry. “Do they like that Turkey is becoming more powerful in the field of defense industry? Of course, they don’t like it… They don’t like it because we no longer buy weapons and ammunition from them,” he stressed.
“The nation responded (to the West) on May 14th. I hope that on May 28 he will do it again,” Erdogan said.
In the first round of the presidential elections, Recep Tayyip Erdogan won 49.5% of the vote, and the candidate of the six-party opposition alliance, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, almost 45%.
On Monday afternoon, far-right candidate Sinan Ogan, who won 5.2% in the first round, called on his supporters to vote for Mr. Erdogan in the second round of the presidential election next Sunday, May 28.
