67-year-old Matteo Zuppi is the president of the bishops’ conference in Italy.

The sovereign pontiff mentioned the intention to launch a peacekeeping mission for Ukraine last month, returning from a visit to Hungary. However, he did not provide specific details about the initiative, telling the media that “it is an ongoing mission, but it is not public yet. When it is public, I will tell.”

According to the Vatican statement, Cardinal Zuppi will try to “contribute to the reduction of tensions in the conflict in Ukraine, hoping – from which the Holy Father has never abandoned – in this way to start the peace process”.

A diplomatic source from the Papal States told Reuters that Zuppi would try to meet separately with Ukrainian and Russian presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Vladimir Putin, respectively.
