An asteroid named 2023 JK will fly by the Earth on Sunday at a distance of about 1.6 million kilometers, the DPA/TCA agency reported on Saturday with reference to Agerpres.
According to the American space agency NASA, 2023 JK is about 2000 commercial aircraft.
Also on Sunday, another asteroid called JD4 of roughly the same size will fly past Earth at nearly twice the distance of JK.
NASA’s Jet Lab is expecting a busy weekend in space, starting with a bus-sized asteroid that will fly within 4.5 million kilometers of our planet on Saturday. Another aircraft-sized object called 2023 JL2 is expected to fly close to Earth on the same day, while another, seven-meter HG11, will come within about 4 million kilometers of Earth.
The distance at which JK 2023 will pass the Earth can be considered small compared to other rocks that travel in space, but considering, for example, that there are 384,000 kilometers between our planet and the Moon, this is not a cause for concern.
On those rare occasions when asteroids “visit” Earth, little usually happens. “About once a year, an asteroid the size of a car slams into Earth’s atmosphere, creates a spectacular fireball, and burns up before reaching the surface,” NASA reports.
