International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan has been wanted by Russia, according to a Russian Interior Ministry memo seen by AFP two months after the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Date of birth: March 30, 1970. Place of birth: Edinburgh, Scotland (…) Wanted on the basis of an article of the Criminal Code,” the note says, without specifying which crime it is about.

Moscow rejected the ICC’s war crimes charges against Vladimir Putin in connection with the “illegal deportation” of thousands of Ukrainian children during the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. According to the Kremlin, Russia is not a member of the ICC and therefore does not recognize the jurisdiction of this court.

Moscow launched a criminal investigation against Karim Khan and three ICC judges days after the indictment against Vladimir Putin was announced in mid-March.

According to the version of the Russian investigation, Khan is accused of “initiating a criminal prosecution of a known innocent person” and “preparing an attack on a representative of a foreign state”, Agerpres notes.
