The promotion play-offs from League 1 to the Championship marked a historic moment for English football as Sheffield Wednesday staged an incredible comeback from a 4-0 first-leg defeat by Peterborough to qualify for the penalty shoot-out.

Sheffield Wednesday bounce back from 0-4 to play at Wembley for promotion to the Championship

The hosts managed to send the match into extra time after goals from Smith (‘9, penalty), Gregory (’25), James (’71) and Palmer (’90+8).

Darren Ferguson’s (Sir Alex Ferguson’s son) coach Peterborough took the lead again after a Gregory (‘105) own goal, but Paterson (‘112) scored to make it 5-1 and it was a penalty shootout.

Sheffield Wednesday won 5-3 after Butler (second man) failed to convert for Peterborough.

Towards the end of the game, Sheffield Wednesday fans invaded the field.
