The New York Times on Wednesday launched a new audio program for its subscribers, the first service of its kind to combine its podcasts, such as “The Daily,” with read articles and recipes, AFP reported.
The app, available for iOS, Apple’s iPhone operating system, “now allows our audience to take it with them times at times when reading isn’t an option, like walking the dog or commuting,” said Stephanie Preiss, vice president of The New York Times Audio.
The New York Times Audio includes existing podcasts such as The Daily, which analyzes the news story daily, as well as read-only articles, sports topics from The Athletic, which was acquired by The New York Times in 2022, and a selection of recipes. books or TV shows and broadcast.
With this new offering, free for the paper’s digital subscribers, the New York daily is strengthening its presence in the audio journalism sector, which has been revolutionized by the launch of podcasts.
In 2020, the New York Times has already bought the production company behind the investigative crime podcast series Serial, which will be available on its new app.
As for the Daily, it had 129 million monthly downloads by the end of 2022, according to the New York Times. The newspaper claims more than 9 million subscribers (online and newspaper combined).
The company has been trying to diversify its offering for several years and has successfully launched a cooking recipe subscription (NYT Cooking) and an online gaming platform, including the word game Wordle.
The acquisition of The Athletic for $550 million in early 2022 would allow the newspaper to reach 15 million subscribers by the end of 2027.
