Archaeological excavations continue to reveal new aspects of Pompeii’s unique history. Skeletons of two men in their 50s who died in the earthquake that preceded the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD have been discovered, according to the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Two skeletons were found in a building that housed a large bakery and bread shop. At the same time, next to the skeletons of two men, archaeologists found six ancient coins, two of which are silver, a necklace and a series of amphoras.

These two inhabitants of ancient Pompeii, as can be seen from the position of the skeletons, were crushed by the walls of the room in which they tried to hide.

“This new discovery confirms that Pompeii is a huge archaeological laboratory, which in recent years – thanks to a new dynamic – has surprised the whole world with a series of outstanding archaeological discoveries,” said Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano.
