A child has died and 23 people are missing after a boat collided with a hippopotamus in a river in southern Malawi.
A wooden boat was carrying 37 people across the Sire River on Monday morning when it capsized and sank, according to local police. Police spokesman Anis Salakoma said 13 passengers were rescued thanks to the intervention of residents, but the remaining 23 are still missing.
Rescuers found a one-year-old child dead, the spokeswoman added, noting that the search for the missing continues.
The Sire River is the largest in Malawi.
