In recent days, Ukrainian troops have recaptured about 20 square kilometers of territory around the city of Bakhmut in the east of the country, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said on Tuesday, according to CNN and The Guardian.
“Our troops liberated about 20 square kilometers from the suburbs of Bakhmut, in the north and south of the city,” Hanna Malyar wrote in her Telegram channel.
CNN notes that his claim cannot be verified, and that many observers believe Ukraine’s progress has been more modest.
The Ukrainian official also acknowledged that Russian forces had also advanced “somewhat” into Bakhmut, drawing in paratroopers and “destroying the town with artillery,” and heavy fighting continued.
What Hanna Malyar reported in a message published in Telegram:
- “The enemy is advancing somewhat deep into Bakhmut, completely destroying the city with artillery. In addition, the enemy is engaging professional airborne units.”
- “The intense struggle continues with different results. In the current situation, our troops are doing everything possible and even more.”
- “The fact that the defense of Bakhmut lasts for so many months and there is progress in certain areas is the result of the strength of our fighters and the high level of professionalism of the defense command.”
- “Let me remind you that the enemy has an advantage in the number of people and weapons. At the same time, thanks to the actions of our military, the enemy has not been able to implement their plans in the direction of Bakhmut since the summer of last year.”
