Ukraine: Chairman of the Supreme Court accused of bribery

Anti-Corruption Agency and Special Prosecutor’s Office Ukraine announced that the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the country Vsevolod Knyazev was arrested at his own request for $ 3 million received by him in the form of bribes, the Ukrayinska Pravda newspaper reported the night before.

Kyiv media reported that searches were also carried out in the offices of other members of the Supreme Court.

The National Anti-Corruption Agency of Ukraine published a photo of a large amount of money on the couch. He said he would give details later.

The service and the special prosecutor’s office said they found “large-scale corruption in the Supreme Court,” referring to a conspiracy seeking various favors that involved “the leadership and its members.” In their statement, they did not explain who bribed the judges and why.

Mr. Knyazev took over as Chairman of the Supreme Court of Ukraine in October 2021.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly vowed to fight the culture of corruption and bribery that is seen as ubiquitous, especially in the business world and public services. Zelenskiy wants to show that Ukraine is ready to start EU accession talks and hopes to get the green light from the EU to start them in 2023.
