On Monday, Japan marks the anniversary of the return of Okinawa.
After the defeat in the battle, which became one of the fiercest in World War II, control of the island passed to the United States. In 1972, Okinawa returned to Japan, but the island remains the main US military base in East Asia. 74% of all US military installations in Japan are located there and occupy about 20% of the island.
