President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky thanked Germany for its support when today he met with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his first visit to Berlin since Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Zelensky arrived in the German capital last Saturday evening from Rome, where he met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Pope Francis. He flew on a German government aircraft, which was escorted into German airspace by Luftwaffe military aircraft.

“At the most critical moment in Ukraine’s recent history, Germany is proud to be a true friend and reliable ally,” the Ukrainian president wrote in the German presidency’s book of reviews. “Together we will win and bring peace back to Europe.”

Zelenskiy is due to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and cabinet members before traveling to Aachen for the Charlemagne Prize.

Germany yesterday announced a new €2.7bn military aid package for Kyiv, the largest since Russia invaded Ukraine. At the same time, he promised to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Zelensky spoke about the “powerful package” in a Twitter post, in which he hinted that he would discuss with German officials the issue of providing his country with weapons, including air defense systems, to rebuild Ukraine after the war, as well as its candidacy for EU membership. but also on security issues.
