“Already in Berlin,” President Zelensk wrote on Twitter early Sunday. “Weapons. Powerful package. Air defense. Reconstruction. EU. NATO. Security.”

After weeks of speculation, official sources confirmed on Saturday the news of the Ukrainian leader’s imminent arrival in Germany.

President Zelenskyi was in Germany after meeting with several Italian leaders and Pope Francis in Italy on Saturday.

The Ukrainian leader plans to receive the prestigious Charlemagne award at a ceremony to be held on Sunday afternoon in the western German city of Aachen.

The award was presented to President Zelenskyi and the Ukrainian people in December, and now it must be presented personally to the head of the Ukrainian state.

The Charlemagne Award, a largely symbolic award, was established in 1950 to recognize efforts to unify Europe.

President Zelenskyy received an award for his efforts to counter Russia’s attack on his country, organizers said. According to them, he was not only the president of his people and the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, but also “a motivator, communicator, mover and supporter between Ukraine and its various supporters.”

Last year, Belarusian oppositionist Svitlana Tikhanovska and two of her colleagues, Maria Kolesnikova and Veronika Zepkalo, received this prestigious award.

Previous winners include former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Pope Francis.

More detailed information about President Zelenskyi’s program in Germany is not disclosed, it is kept secret for security reasons. However, there were speculations that he would meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Frank-Walter-Steinmeier in Berlin.
