The Colombian Navy has announced that it has seized the largest submarine used to transport drugs in Colombia’s history, measuring 30 meters long and three meters wide, and carrying three tons of cocaine, AFP reports.
The semi-submersible was seized on Tuesday as it headed to Central America, one of the busiest routes for illegal drug trafficking to the United States, the world’s biggest consumer of Colombian cocaine.
Images released by authorities show a longboat on the water and its cargo unloaded on land. There are hundreds of packages of drugs with the inscription “Toyota” (traffickers like to give their supplies a name that is often chosen among the big global brands). In the middle are three men who were detained.
Three suspects arrested in Colombia said they were “forced by a drug-trafficking organization to board and take a semi-submersible vehicle to Central America.”
This is the largest drug submarine identified since the capture of this type in 1993.
Colombia is the largest producer of cocaine in the world.
Over three decades, the Colombian navy seized 228 such boats, which, loaded with tons of drugs, are sent to the United States or even cross the Atlantic to Europe.
