Three days congress titled “Beyond Growth 2023” is being held at the European Parliament in Brussels from 15 to 17 May in conjunction with a cross-party initiative of 20 MEPs from the Greens (The Green/EFA), the Left (The Left/GUE), the Socialist Democrats (S&D), the group Renew Europe, EPP (EPP) and independent.

The conference, which is the largest conference held in this parliamentary term, will feature over 5,500 registrants (3,000 in person) and a list of speakers including Joseph Stiglitz, Kate Raworth, Gael Giraud, Dan O’Neill, Mariana Mazzucato, Tim Jackson , Sandrine Dixon-Deklev, Philippa Siegl-Glöckner, Maya Goepel, Olivier De Schutter, Jason Hickel, Timothy Parrick, Dominic Meda, Julia Steinberger, Giorgos Kallis, Anne Pettifor, Valentina Bosetti, Aurélien Barrault, Yamina Saheb, Johan Rockström, Romina Boarini , Robert Costanza, Farhana Sultana.

The purpose of the conference is to discuss a policy for sustainable prosperity in Europe, based on the requested systemic changes towards economic, social and environmental sustainability, as well as the necessary governance framework for this.

The organizers want to redefine priorities within the EU, the inclusion of social indicators in decision-making and, ultimately, legislation, rather than simplifying development issues and issues solely by economic indicators such as GDP. The main goal is to find the basis that will combine social prosperity with sustainable economic development within the planet.

This three-day event follows the successful organization of 2018. 20 MEPs from all democratic factions of the parliament with the support of many organizations, as well as with the participation of citizens. It will bring together national legislators, academics, social partners and civil society organizations.

The conference will be opened by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of Parliament Roberta Metzola and co-chair of the Greens Philip Lamberts.

Greek MEP THE LEFT/GUE and co-organizer Petros Kokkalis will moderate the discussion on “Opening a fair and sustainable economy through universal basic services” (Opening a fair and sustainable economy through universal basic services) to increase financial participation and strengthen democracy. based on existing European best practices that should be taken into account.

The conference will be held at the “homes” of MEPs in the European Parliament in Brussels, and will also be broadcast live.
