President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky expected tomorrow in Berlin, during his first visit to Germany since February 2022, when an adviser to Mykhailo Podolyak commented that a new program of German military assistance to Kyiv in the amount of 2.7 billion euros; “dooms” Russia “to defeat”.
This aid “directly shows that (…) Russia is doomed to fail,” he tweeted, hailing the “decisive” support of Ukraine’s Western allies after 15 months of war.
As part of this assistance, Berlin will provide Kyiv with another twenty Marder armored personnel carriers, 30 Leopard-1 tanks and four IRIS-T-SLM air defense systems, Pistorius said.
For his part, Andriy Yermak, head of the presidential administration of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said in a Telegram message that the country would also receive 200 reconnaissance drones, 100 armored vehicles, as well as a large amount of ammunition.
According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, this is the largest aid package Germany has offered to Ukraine.
The federal government has yet to confirm the visit, but security forces in Berlin, Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia have been put on alert, and the chancellery has given the media certificates “for a possible visit by a high-ranking official.”
The planning of the visit of the Ukrainian president was first leaked two weeks ago by the Berlin police. The capital newspaper published the details of his arrival, which was supposed to take place this evening, as well as the hotel where he was supposed to stay, the schedule of his meetings and even his helicopter flight to Aachen. The leak provoked a strong reaction from Kyiv and led to an internal investigation by the Berlin authorities.
Since then, there has been no information about a possible visit by Volodymyr Zelensky, and government spokesman Steven Hebstrait specified that “if there is a visit, it will be announced at the last minute.”
The Ukrainian leader is now in Rome, and his previous visits were to London, Paris, Brussels, Warsaw, Helsinki and The Hague. The central topics of the talks between the Ukrainian president and European leaders are the need to further equip the Ukrainian army and support for the country’s candidacy for membership in the European Union and NATO.
