According to a poll conducted by the YouGov research institute for the dpa agency and cited by Agerpres, most Germans want Ukraine to start talks with Russia to end the war triggered by the Russian invasion almost 15 months ago.

To the question “Do you think it is worth or not worth Ukraine now to negotiate with Russia on ending the war?” 55% of those who answered spoke in favor of immediate peace talks, 28% – against.

A majority of 54% voted against Ukraine joining NATO.

The survey was conducted from May 5 to 10 on a sample of 2,147 Germans from all over the country. Results were weighted and representative of the 18+ population.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who will participate in the NATO summit in Lithuania in July, hopes that the leaders of the allied states will open the way for his country to join, dpa reminds.

Germany opposes Ukraine’s accession to NATO

In an April speech, he stated that “neither the majority of Ukrainians, nor the majority of Europeans, nor the majority of the inhabitants of the entire NATO space will understand the leaders of the alliance, if there is a well-deserved political invitation for Ukraine to join the Alliance, which was not initiated at this summit in Vilnius.”

The Kyiv leader insists on the “accelerated” accession of Ukraine to NATO under a preferential regime.

The United States and other member states, such as Germany, have expressed reservations about this, believing that one of the preconditions for membership is non-involvement in international conflicts.

Speaking on this occasion on April 21, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius rejected a quick decision on Ukraine joining the alliance.

“The door is open, but now is not the time to decide,” he said then, adding that Ukraine is aware of the state of the decision-making process on this issue. Pistorius also noted that the decision on Ukraine’s accession to the alliance cannot be made only out of solidarity, but “with a cool head and a warm heart.” And not vice versa.”

On Sunday, Zelenskyi – as a representative of the Ukrainian people – will be presented with the Charlemagne Prize in Aachen, Germany. It is not yet known whether he will be personally present at the ceremony.
