“Lesbos is in a different place than 2019,” as he said today turned out to be the prime minister and president of New Democracy. Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The Prime Minister was at the former KYT of Moria, the first stop of his tour of the island, where he took part in the presentation of the use of the space acquired by the Municipality of Mytilene with the financial support of the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum in the context of supporting local communities.
“I came to Moria, which functioned like hell with over 20,000 people and no longer exists. I kept my promise, we overcame obstacles, pursued a strict but fair policy, defended our borders by land and sea, proving that the sea has borders and we can protect them. Of the 600,000 people who passed through the island during the SYRIZA period, we only reached 10,000 during the New Democracy years,” he said. Mr. Mitsotakis, noting that all these years “we have closed outstanding issues, dealt with problems and supported local communities.”
For his part, Mr. Mitarakis welcomed the prime minister to the former KYT, in his words, “in the best of Lesbos.” The Minister of Immigration and Asylum stressed that “we have committed ourselves to the Greek people to significantly reduce flows and drastically reduce the impact of the crisis on local communities. And we did it with a plan and determination.”
At the same time, he talked about supporting local communities with more than 110 million euros for projects and actions through the Solidarity Fund, as well as through emergency grants and municipal fees. “We have supported 45 municipalities and their organizations across the country with more than 110 million euros for projects and actions. 65 million through the fund and 47 million in compensation and municipal fees. The North Aegean Sea has been allocated 60 million over three years, i.e., comparatively, 1/5 of the North Aegean Regional Operational Program for 2014-2020 and 1/7 for 2021-2027,” said Mr. Mitarakis.
It should be noted that it is planned to build school and university buildings and sports facilities on the site of the former KYUT.
Mayor of Mytilene Stratis Kitelis was also present and welcomed today’s first stop by the Prime Minister at the former KYT of Moria.
