Musk, who has ruled the company with an iron fist since its $44 billion acquisition last October, with a series of changes and layoffs, said he will take on the role of executive chairman and chief technology officer overseeing products, software and systems.
Last December, Musk conducted a poll on Twitter asking platform users for their opinion on whether he should remain CEO, and most pointed him to the “exit” door.
Musk said he would abide by the poll’s results, but later clarified that he would hand over the position “as soon as I find someone stupid enough to take the job!” In February, he confirmed that he plans to find a replacement before the end of the year.
