Serbia: “Successful” Citizens’ Handover of Illegal Weapons

The campaign to “disarm” Serbian citizens, which began on May 8 after two massacres in a primary school in Belgrade and in three villages in Mladenovac, is proceeding with great success, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said.

“Over the past three days, an almost unbelievable amount, we have collected 8,500 different weapons, 784 anesthetic-explosive devices, i.e. bombs and mortars, 398,450 pieces of ammunition of various calibers,” says Vučić in a video posted on his Instagram account. .

It is noted that the Ministry of Internal Affairs (ss Public Order) of Serbia has set a deadline from May 8 to June 8 for the transfer of all weapons illegally held by citizens without any criminal consequences. After this period, illegal possession of weapons will be punished with a harsh sentence without parole.

Citizens are not required to provide their personal details when handing over weapons to police stations, nor are they required to present police ID upon entry. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, there were cases when the owners of illegal weapons called the police to collect explosive devices (mines, grenades, mortars), which they were afraid to carry themselves. In these cases, as already mentioned, the transportation of military equipment is carried out by a specialized pyrotechnic unit of the army.

Serbia, with a population of 6.8 million, has 765,000 gun licenses. However, an estimated 2.5 million citizens own at least one firearm.
