On Wednesday, Republican lawmakers said members of the Joe Biden family and their associates received about $10 million from foreign companies, mostly Chinese and Romanian, in full transparency.
The accusations came in the context of a long-running campaign centered on the candidacies of Hunter Biden, the son of the current US president with a turbulent life.
He has been accused by American right-wingers of using his last name and father’s phone book when the latter was Barack Obama’s vice president (2009-2017) to make deals of dubious legitimacy in various countries.
In a report released yesterday, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee alleged that other members of the Biden family, including the president’s brother and sister-in-law, were doing business in China and Romania.
They are based on bank transaction data they obtained through the committee’s ability to conduct investigations. They claimed that Joe Biden’s relatives set up a nebulous network of companies to hide the origin of the funds.
“The lack of transparency in the activities of the Biden family abroad raises important national security issues,” they said.
“While Vice President Biden was teaching ethics and anti-corruption classes in Romania, Hunter Biden was receiving (…) more than $1 million from a Romanian-controlled company accused of corruption,” they stressed.
However, their report does not mention any illegality of the Biden family, nor any direct connection with the American president. But during a press conference, Republican Congressman Byron Donalds said he was sure “Joe Biden was in the know.”
In a statement, Democratic members of the same committee accused their fellow Republicans of “choosing” to cover “false information.”
The White House called it “ridiculous” to accuse Joe Biden of serving China’s interests “based on baseless accusations and personal attacks,” but he did not elaborate.
The affairs and adventures of Hunter Biden, who has long become a drug addict, may become a weak link for Joe Biden, who at the age of 80 officially announced that he would seek a new term in 2024.
The president never stopped supporting his child. “My son did nothing wrong, I trust him,” she said in early May, even as Hunter Biden faces a federal tax fraud investigation.
