The Coast Guard arrested migrant traffickers off the coast yesterday Rhodesafter the chase.
It was early Tuesday morning when a Rhodes Port Authority patrol boat spotted a suspicious speedboat disembarking foreigners at Gennadi.
The boat operators did not respond to light and sound signals and tried to escape towards the Turkish coast, making dangerous maneuvers and developing high speed.
A chase ensued and warning shots were fired “in a safe area in accordance with established fire regulations”, resulting in Coast Guard officers being able to stop the vessel and arrest the two foreign operators.
A further check in the Gennady area identified a total of seven foreigners who identified the two operators as human traffickers.
The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Rhodes Central Port Authority.
