The seventeen migrants who were on an island in the Evros River, near the coastal zone of Pythia Didymoteicho, were located by the Didymoteicho Border Guard Department with the assistance of E.M.A.K. and the presence of Frontex officials, and they were safely removed from the scene.
According to the police, these are 7 men, 2 women and 8 minors, whose identity was previously reported by M.K.O. about where they were. After checking the information and establishing its authenticity, coordinated rescue actions were immediately carried out, and a Greek Red Cross team arrived on the scene to provide assistance if necessary.
It was established that the migrants were illegally brought into Greek territory by a smuggler who ferried them from the opposite shore in a boat and left them on the island.
According to the police, the clothes, food and first aid of the rescued, who are in good health, were immediately covered by the Greek authorities and they will be handed over to PROKEKA Orestiada for further procedures in accordance with current legislation.
