The man who killed eight people at a Dallas-area mall had “neo-Nazi ideas” but appeared to identify his victims at random and without regard to race, age or gender, Reuters reported.

The gunman, identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, opened fire with an AR-15 rifle on Saturday at a busy mall in Allen, Texas. The mass attack ended minutes later when police fatally shot the suspect.

Among the eight dead during the attack were three children – two sisters, as well as a 3-year-old boy from another family, whose parents were also among the dead. In addition, another 10 people aged from 5 to 61 were injured.

Investigators recovered eight firearms, including the murder weapon, from the gun and his vehicle, and all of the weapons were legally purchased, said Hank Sibley, regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“The big question we have now is: What is his motive? Why did he do it? We don’t know,” Sibley said at an afternoon press conference.

Sibley said that based on an analysis of the attacker’s social media profile, clothing and tattoos, authorities determined that Garcia had a “neo-Nazi mindset,” but added that it was too early in the investigation to say whether the attack could be considered an act of domestic terrorism. .

Sibley also said Garcia served in the U.S. Army, suffered from an unspecified mental illness and previously worked in private security.
