Bear caught in illegal noose – chewed on tree trunk to free himself

The bear got into illegal noose on a boar and in her desperate effort to free herself she had chewed through most of the trunk of the tree on which the trap stood, and her gums were bleeding.

The trapped animal was spotted by a passing shepherd outside his village. Pirgetu Larisa and notified her Seventh hunting federation.

Then the Laboratory of Microbiology and Parasitology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly and the Environmental Organization “Kallisto”, with which they cooperate in the LIFEARCPROM and LIFE Bear Smart Corridors projects for the brown bear, were informed.

A team of experts, as part of a human-bear interaction incident protocol, approached the animal and anesthetized it.

They even discovered, as mentioned in the related announcement from “Callisto”, that during the imprisonment, the unfortunate animal was stressed and gnawed at the trunk of the tree, on which the noose was installed, in an attempt to escape.

After sedation, it turned out that he had only superficial wounds in the neck caused by a wire rope, which the veterinarians cleaned out without causing serious concern. This was followed by the imposition of a special radio collar and resuscitation of the bear.

In accordance with “come on”, the radio collar will provide useful data to test the hypothesis that the bear is repopulating areas from which it disappeared in the recent past.

“The recolonization of areas by large mammals, such as a bear, is a completely normal phenomenon and at the same time a very slowly developing process. Over the past 20 years, there have been several cases of bears appearing in the wider area of Olympus, and then either returning to their former habitats or being illegally killed by people, ”the message emphasizes.

It is noted that the incident in Pyrgetos is the 4th one that the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly and Callisto have jointly dealt with, after the incident in Florina (09/10/2022) and two incidents in Prespes (09/30/2022). 12/2019 and 02/04/2023), which were considered in the framework of the LIFEARCPROM project.

The use of a wire loop is illegal both to trap wild boars and to prevent damage to agricultural or livestock production.
