How to protect our heart from diabetes

Early diagnosis of diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular disease is particularly important, as 75% of people with diabetes die from acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, or ischemic vascular disease.

In our country, more than 1 million people suffer from diabetes. Half do not know that they have diabetes and already have subclinical cardiovascular disease.

People with diabetes have a 2-3 times greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease, says Gerasimos Siassos, president of the Hellenic Academy of Sciences School of Medicine.

– diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness,

– diabetic nephropathy, which can lead to kidney failure and hemodialysis,

– peripheral vasculopathy and neuropathy, which can lead to ulcerative infections of the lower extremities (diabetic foot) and amputation,

– cardiovascular events such as acute myocardial infarction, heart failure and ischemic stroke.

Proper blood sugar regulation significantly reduces cardiovascular complications, Mr. Siassos notes, adding that heart health and proper screening for early detection of cardiovascular complications are essential.

-Regulate your sugar

-Make sure your body weight is ideal

-Do not smoke

-Eat healthy food and follow the Mediterranean diet

– Walk daily for at least 30 minutes

-Measure blood pressure and adjust it

– Check your cholesterol levels

– Take prescribed medications according to medical instructions

The Heart and Diabetes Working Group of the Hellenic Society of Cardiology, in close collaboration with cardiologists, endocrinologists and diabetes pathologists, has established a clinic for primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes mellitus or prediabetes.

The Faculty of Medicine at EKPA has a significant number of faculty members from various disciplines and specializations who are actively involved in diabetes mellitus and obesity as a disease and comorbidities. There are special diabetic centers and special clinics for cardiometabolic diseases and obesity in Laiko, Attiko, Ippokratio, Sotiria and children’s hospitals. In addition, special clinics for bariatric metabolic surgery work closely with the People’s Hospital, Hippocrates and Eugenides, which is an integral part of the treatment of obesity.

Finally, specialized psychiatry educators have extensive experience with eating disorders.
