French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne today called for a “cold dialogue” between Paris and Rome, a day after the crisis sparked by comments from French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s “inability” to manage immigration.
“I would like to reiterate that Italy is an important partner for France, that our relationship is based on mutual respect, and that we will maintain a discussion, a cool dialogue in order to continue working together,” Born said.
After a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croix, Bourne was asked if her government would apologize to Italy.
French Foreign Minister J. Darmanin said yesterday that Georgia Meloni “is incapable of managing immigration.” In response, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani immediately canceled a planned visit to Paris. Today, Tajani even called on Darmanen to apologize for his statements.
