For two weeks now, a strange bird has been sitting on tree branches near Prospect Park Lake in New York. He shows no signs of returning to where he probably came from, the South. Recently, many birdwatchers have been visiting Prospect Park in the hope of seeing the bird up close.
Aninga, a large snake-necked waterfowl, joined a number of other birds that migrated further north.
The researchers say his unusual move to New York is partly due to climate change. “What we are seeing is most likely population displacement due to climate,” said Andrew Fansworth, a researcher at the Cornell Lab.
In recent months, ornithologists have spotted other unusual feathered visitors to Prospect Park. “Some of the species include the yellow-bellied hawk, the Akanda flycatcher (which now breeds in the park) and others,” said Brooklyn-based ornithologist Tom Stephenson.
