A few days ago the decision of the hospital Hair not to “place” in the refrigerators of morgues “unclaimed”, but only citizens who died in the hospital, caused not only surprise, but also the intervention of the prosecutor (04/28/2023).
The reason for this decision was the death of a 45-year-old woman who was found dead in her home from pathological causes. And, despite the initial position of the hospital administration, the body, by order of the prosecutor, was eventually transported to Achillopoulio, where it remained until the morning of May 3, since the police had to first look for her relatives. The case under consideration reminded us of the more complex and lengthy issue of citizens who have passed away and are either not wanted by their relatives (or have no relatives), or there is no directly available evidence of their identity, and they must be found.
“Our hospital, which serves all of Magnesia, including the Prefecture-administered Sporades, has six cold rooms.. There are 12 more at the municipal cemetery of Volos, but this is the only one in Magnesia where there are refrigerators, ”says K, when asked about this by the head of the Achillopul hospital, John Dokos.
He adds the following: “This is not a denial. This is our reaction and our objection to the systematic transformation of the hospital into a place… for the burial of bodies. The mission of the public hospital is to provide medical services, not to function as a “storehouse” for the dead. The problem is very acute in Magnesia Prefecture.
