Eight people, possibly homeless, have died in the Czech Republic after a fire broke out in a construction container in the city of Brno on Wednesday evening, police said on Thursday.
According to Czech Television, the fire consumed about 12 containers at the edge of a residential complex before being extinguished early in the morning.
Police said on Twitter that they have not yet determined the cause of the fire. A police spokesman told the CTK news agency that the victims, who have yet to be identified, were most likely homeless.
Rescuers reported that there were no casualties.
In 2020, an apartment building fire killed 11 people in one of the deadliest incidents in the country. Another fire in an abandoned building often used by the homeless in Prague killed nine people in 2010.
Brno, about 200 km southeast of Prague, is the second largest city in the Czech Republic.
