Sudan: more than 430,000 refugees due to armed conflict

Deadly encounters in Sudan caused the displacement of more than 330,000 people within the country, while more than 100,000 people crossed the border to take refuge in neighboring countries. United Nations.

At the same time, the UN announced that Sudan’s aid program was only 14% funded this year, and aid agencies are short of $1.5 billion to address the country’s humanitarian crisis, which already existed but worsened due to conflicts.

Representative of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Jens Lerke appealed to the international community to support humanitarian organizations.

“Without this, they simply cannot function,” he said at a UN press conference in Geneva, explaining that humanitarian organizations lacked the resources to work in Sudan even before the conflict began.

Fears of an outcome of “over 800,000 people”

Clashes between the regular army and paramilitaries have forced more than 334,000 people to leave the country since mid-April, according to the International Organization for Migration.

“The number of people who have fled their homes in the past two weeks exceeds all movements related to the conflict in Sudan in 2022,” an IOM spokesman said at a press conference.

The UN fears a mass exodus of “more than 800,000 people” from Sudan if fighting continues as warring parties ignore ceasefire agreements and the international community fears a humanitarian catastrophe.

“This emergency is in its infancy and we are trying to process the numbers to get an idea of the extent of the emergency,” UNHCR spokeswoman Olga Saragado said.
