Papadopoulos: Earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above in Corinth every 25-30 years. us 27

After yesterday earthquake 4.2 on the Richter scale at Nafpaktos, seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos commented that Corinthian can “give” strong earthquakes, emphasizing the need for prevention and vigilance.

Regarding the possibility of a stronger earthquake, he replied: “Only statistics we can talk. The irrefutable data we have show that strong earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above in the Gulf of Corinth are repeated every 25-30 years. We are 27 years old. The last strong earthquake of this kind was in Aigios in 1995,” said Mr. Papadopoulos.

“I consider it the duty of scientists to remind of the danger, for the danger will not disappear if we do not remind of it. The risk exists because it comes from natural processes (…) I find a lack of prevention at the local level by local authorities, such as mainly municipalities, which are empowered by law to prepare the ground and prepare the world.”
