On Monday, Iryna Begu reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. Our athlete defeated Lyudmila Samsonova, the 18th favorite of the race on the ground of Caja Magica. After the match, which lasted an hour and 47 minutes, Iryna won with a double 6-4.

Samsonova started the match as she wanted: she served well, controlled many matches on the main line, and a controlled break moved her to 3-0 on the table.

However, a very good match for Irina followed. Waking up from the slight lethargy that gripped her at the beginning of the match, Begu went on a wonderful streak of five games in a row, the score became 5-3 in favor of our player.

Missing a set point on her opponent’s serve, Iryna closed the set from the start, the score 6-4.

Our athlete dominated at the beginning of the second set, took a 2:0 lead, but a series of three games in a row, won by Samsonova, followed.

The decisive break happened with the score 4-4: Iryna scored on the return, and then closed the match on serve (6-4).
