Spain: Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador for a video about Spanish soldiers in Ukraine

Her Foreign Office Spain called him Friday yesterday Russian Ambassador Yuriy Klymenko to express a strong protest from Madrid over a video posted on social networks, which says that Spanish soldiers are fighting in Ukraine.

Klimenko was asked to explain the publication of the video at the Russian Embassy in Madrid, the Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed.

Following an immediate response from the Spanish government on Wednesday evening, the Russian embassy in Madrid removed the video in question from their social media accounts.

El PaĆs newspaper and other Spanish media reported that the video in question quoted a statement by Spanish Defense Minister Margherita Robles on April 12, in which she assured that no NATO member, including her own, would send troops to Ukraine. The video showed men in military uniform speaking Spanish in a trench. This gave the impression that Spanish soldiers might be present on the battlefields in Ukraine.

Spanish Defense Minister Robles accused Russia of trying to “undermine the unity between EU and NATO member states” by all means possible, including “disinformation”. At the same time, he stressed that Moscow is not going to achieve its goal, repeating that there are no troops in Ukraine from any of the NATO countries.
