UK: Unione medical workers reject government wage offer

Employees in british health Unite-affiliated services voted against the government’s pay proposal, the union said today.

The offer included a lump sum payment of 2% of wages in 2022/23 and a 5% wage increase in 2023/24. It was accepted by health workers represented by three other unions.

Unite announced plans a new strike after 52% of its members who took part in the process voted against the government’s proposal. Voter turnout was 55%..

“It was clear from the start of Unite that this proposal was unlikely to be accepted,” Unite Secretary General Sharon Graham said in a statement. “Members of Unite will now return to strike to continue their fight.”

This decision is a blow to the efforts of the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak put an end to a dispute that has seen hundreds of thousands of health workers go on strike in recent months, adding to the strain on the country’s health care system.
