Russia’s foreign ministry on Friday criticized the prospect of a nuclear deal between the United States and South Korea, saying it would destabilize the region and the broader geopolitical situation, Reuters reported.

Moscow’s comments came after the United States promised Seoul’s government on Wednesday more information about its nuclear plans and South Korea assured it would not seek to develop nuclear weapons as part of a deal that both sides say is the result of increasingly aggressive activities of the Pyongyang regime.

Russia has repeatedly criticized what it calls the escalation of the US military presence in Asia.

“This development is clearly destabilizing and will have serious negative consequences for regional security and affect global stability,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Moscow also said that the “ambition” of the US and NATO to have a “decisive military advantage” would “only increase tensions” and could lead to an “arms race”.

While on an official visit to Washington, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said during a joint press conference with Joe Biden that the agreement is aimed at strengthening South Korea’s defense capabilities in the context of North Korea’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.
