Andy Murray exited the ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid on Thursday after losing to Italy’s Andrea Vavassori (ATP 164) in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(7).

Andy Murray defeated Andrea Vavassori at ATP Madrid

The former world number one started the match poorly and Vavassori raced to a 4-0 lead, but after a timid comeback attempt, the Italian easily won the first set.

The second set was also controlled by Wavassori, but Andy Murray managed to take it to a tie-break where the world number 164 won 9-7.

The game lasted one hour and 33 minutes.

In the second round, Andrea Vavassori will meet the second favorite of the tournament, Russian Daniil Medvedev (3 ATP).

The ATP Mutua Madrid Open takes place from April 25 to May 7 on clay in the Caja Magica complex. It is in the ATP 1000 category, has a total prize money of 7,705,780 euros, and the titular champion is Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
