​Jules Niemeyer (67th WTA ranking) made a surprise in Madrid: the German won in two sets with a score of 7-6(9), 6-1 against Petra Kvitova, the tenth favorite, in the second round of the match at Caja Magica.

The match was tied only in the first set, which required a fairly long tiebreak (11-9) to decide Niemeyer.
Petra mentally collapsed in the second set, in which she was far from the best (making at least 53 unforced errors during the match).
A three-time Caja Magica champion (in 2011, 2015 and 2018), Kvitova was unrecognizable in the second set, which she lost 6-1 (she was leading 5-0). The match lasted one hour and 52 minutes.
The athlete from the Czech Republic was among the top ten favorites to win the WTA 1000 competition trophy.
The WTA Mutua Madrid Open takes place from April 25 to May 7 on clay in the Caja Magica complex. It is in the WTA 1000 category, has a total prize money of US$7,652,174, and the title holder is Ons Jabert. Simona Halep won in 2016 and 2017.
