White House ‘welcomes’ phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskynoting, however, that it is too early to conclude whether it will promote a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, told reporters that the phone call “is a positive thing,” but as to whether it could be a meaningful step toward peace, he replied that “we’re not in a position to still know.”
Recall that earlier the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelenskysaid he had a “long and meaningful” phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, hoping it would strengthen Kyiv’s ties with Beijing.
“I had a long and meaningful phone conversation with President Xi Jinping,” he tweeted.
“I believe that this telephone conversation, as well as the appointment of the Ukrainian ambassador to China, will give a strong impetus to the development of our bilateral relations.”
It is worth noting that this is the first contact between the two men since Vladimir Putin’s army invaded Ukraine.
