Russia is not inviting foreign heads of state or government to its traditional military parade on May 9, the second year of the Kremlin’s war against Ukraine, DPA reports. Only the president of the former Soviet republic will take part in the celebrations, as he was on a working visit at that time.

“There were no special invitations this year,” the Kremlin spokesman said on Monday, Interfax news agency quoted Agerpres as saying.

Only the president of the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, Sadar Japarov, who will be in Moscow on a working visit, will take part in the celebrations on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union in the Second World War.

Officially, the Kremlin argued for the absence of foreign heads of state by the fact that this year is not an important anniversary of events.

However, for similar anniversaries in the past, heads of state have come to Moscow to attend a ceremony in Moscow’s Red Square, where more than 10,000 soldiers and military equipment are on display for the occasion.

Last year, foreign guests did not participate in the parade in Moscow for the anniversary in May.

This year, holidays in the border regions and on the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia, were mostly canceled for security reasons.
