Ferrari may soon shake up the hierarchy in the universe of the most expensive cars of all time. RM Sotheby’s traditional Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance auction will take place on May 20 at Villa Erba, Lake Como. Indeed, among the stars of the sale, will be an extremely rare and wonderful 1972 312 PB.

This is the last Ferrari designed for the “P” class, i.e. the prototype, and the same one that won, back in 1972, 1000 kilometers of Buenos Aires and 1000 kilometers of Nürburgringthereby inscribing one of the most important pages in the history of the company engaged in jumping.

Almost like Formula 1

The Ferrari 312 PB is a racing car based on a matching single seater Formula 1 car of the time. Powered by the same 3.0-litre 180-degree flat-12 engine, not to be confused with an opposed engine, it was the last sports prototype produced by Ferrari’s sports division, which competed with the I win the sports car world championship.

The 1972 World Sports Car Championship became the 20ththousand FIA World Sports Car Championship (WSC) season. It is open to S-category sports cars and GT-category Grand Touring cars. This championship ran from 9 January 1972 to 22 July 1972 and included eleven races, including the two aforementioned races won by 312 PB. Among the eleven championship races were also the 6 Hours of Daytona, the 12 Hours of Sebring or the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Targa Florio.

The car is offered for sale with many spare parts and several certificates of authenticity.

According to preliminary estimates, it can reach 18 million eurosentering the top three most expensive “classic” cars in the world after the Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé and the Ferrari 250 GTO.
