Seoul banned the export of equipment and cars to the Russian Federation and Belarus
In the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the South Korean authorities have increased the list of prohibited goods for export to the Russian Federation and Belarus. Seoul authorities have announced a massive expansion of this list – from 57 to 798 items, Yonhap news agency reported on Monday, April 24.
Among the more than 740 product categories added to the updated list are semiconductors, chemicals, steel, automobiles, process equipment and quantum computers, he notes. At the same time, it is not specified whether the restrictions will apply to parts for cars, equipment and computers.
Seoul fears use of export products for military purposes
The decision is due to the high probability that these products are used by importing countries for the production of weapons and for military purposes, indicated the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy of South Korea. At the same time, Seoul promised that in “exceptional cases” it would consider delivering prohibited goods to both countries. The new export bans will go into effect on April 28.
South Korea has imposed sanctions on the Russian Federation following the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These restrictions apply to the banking sector and to the export of certain categories of products, in particular microprocessors, equipment for the production, testing and verification of semiconductors, as well as software necessary for the production of transistors and electronic equipment.
