Russian soldiers in eastern Ukraine have found a way to avoid Ukrainian drones as Kyiv forces increasingly use them against them, a Ukrainian military official said.
“Another event worth noting as part of the ongoing invasion is the use of thermal blankets/coats by Russian soldiers in the immediate vicinity of Donetsk,” reports “Tatarigami_UA”, the Twitter account of an anonymous undercover Ukrainian army officer.

He refers to the accounts of the Ukrainian military, who claim that Russian sabotage groups use these thermal blankets to avoid detection by thermal imaging drones, which are equipped with Kyiv forces.

A video posted on a Russian Telegram channel purportedly demonstrated the products’ alleged effectiveness, showing how a soldier could remain undetected under such a blanket.

“While the technology itself is not groundbreaking, we are still seeing notable adaptations being used by the adversary as part of their attempts to change. Therefore, it is extremely important to take into account the capabilities of the enemy and deploy your own countermeasures accordingly,” Tatarigami notes.
At the same time, he says that Russia is unlikely to be able to supply its forces with such blankets in large numbers, but warns that even small groups of Russian soldiers equipped with such as sniper teams can pose a danger.
The improvisation that some of the Russian military is resorting to also comes in the context of a veritable wave of videos that have appeared on social media in recent months of Kyiv-based drone operators attacking them with kamikaze drones.
But most of these direct attacks on Russian infantry occur during the day, with the Ukrainian military using drones at night more to adjust artillery fire, in battlefield surveillance missions, or to coordinate attacks by its own ground forces.
