Part of the roof of an abandoned building engulfed in flames collapsed report on the fire that occurred today at 06:40, at the intersection of Aiolos and Agia Irini streetsin the center of Athens, and is currently under partial control.
Fire department spokesman Yiannis Artopios told the Athens Macedonian News Agency that due to the fragility and age of the building, the fire department was facing a collapse problem.
In particular, according to Mr. Artofios, the roof of the abandoned building immediately caught fire, as it rested on wooden beams and burned down, which led to its collapse. At the same time, due to the prevailing heat load, the flames spread – to a small extent – to the roof of a nearby Mexican restaurant, however, as it became known from the fire department, the damage caused was “imperceptible”.
“The restaurant building was borderline, the business has no problems, it is functioning,” Mr. Artofios told APE-BPE. It is also noted that due to the immediate intervention of the fire department, no one was in danger of fire. However, fire brigades remain on the alert because, as Mr. Patofios points out, such buildings, due to their age and fragility, are at risk of collapsing in case of fire.
A total of 21 firefighters arrived on the scene with seven vehicles, one boom cart and one ladder cart. The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire.
