Italy today launched an operation to expel its citizens, as well as the Swiss and employees of the Vatican embassy in Sudan, where bloody fighting between the army and paramilitaries rages.
“We have contacted every one of the 140 Italians in Sudan and we are doing everything we can to guarantee their safety,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told public television Rai3.
“Within a few hours, until tonight, we hope everyone will be safe,” said the Italian Foreign Minister, while the evacuation operation is carried out with the assistance of the Italian Ministry of Defense.
“In total, our soldiers will take under their protection about 200 people, including citizens of Switzerland and members of the apostolic delegation,” said the head of the Italian diplomacy of the Vatican Embassy in Sudan, without specifying how many Italian soldiers are in Sudan.
