Volos: Christos Nikopoulos left SYRIZA

Christos Nikopoulos has resigned as a member of the Secretariat of the Prefectural Committee of Magnesia SYRIZA following a series of posts he made in previous days against Eleni Chronopoulou for her complaint of rape and abuse by Alexis Georgoulis.

The prefectural committee of Magnesia SYRIZA met late last night, Friday, April 21, and before it had time to announce its decision on the resignation of Christos Nikopoulos, he resigned. But he insisted on his apology about the conspiracy theory, saying that the timing of the case was not accidental and expressed surprise that his humor was not visible in what he wrote and posted online. Immediately after and before the decision to expel him from the party was announced to him, he resigned so as not to further damage the faction in the upcoming elections.

Christos Nikopoulos was a member of the PASOK agricultural union for many years and moved to SYRIZA about ten years ago.

As of yesterday morning, SYRIZA from Magnesia has thought ahead about its position after the uproar over the posts of Christos Nicopoulos and released a statement to that effect, stating:

“The position of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance is clear and unequivocal: no tolerance, no hiding on issues of abuse and gender-based violence, whoever they are. We are always close to the victims, especially those women who have the courage and huge spiritual reserves to go out and talk about the tragedies they have experienced.

Personal views Chr. Nikopoulou are self-evidently reprehensible and have absolutely nothing to do with the principles, values and ideals of the Left.

As SYRIZA-PS of Magnesia, we want the case to be cleared up as soon as possible and justice done for Al. Sad case. The political exploitation of cases of abuse and gender-based violence offends the victims and does not contribute to the effective treatment and elimination of such incidents.”
