Answering the question of the Political Insider show on Prima TV on Saturday, whether UDMR intends to leave the government, Kelemen Hunor stressed that there is no problem.

“We are not going to leave the government”

“We have no intention of leaving the government. We are committed to this coalition for the entire mandate. During this period, nothing happened, no one left the government, no one entered the government.

Maybe the Liberals lost a few MPs, but that’s life, that’s how it is in politics, some leave. There were fewer of them, but there were no other changes.

So no problem, we have no plans to leave, but in Romania, as you well know, anything can happen. It is a country of all possibilities, at least in politics,” said Kelemen Hunor.

Kelemen Hunor: “Rotation does not concern us”

“Rotary does not concern us. This is an agreement signed between PNL and PSD, and the circular does not apply to us either when we talk about the position of prime minister or when we talk about ministries. It can be waived… but you have to say that this bilateral agreement no longer exists, but then the rotating agreement no longer exists.

Or if there is a rotary, then it is on the chord. You can open a thread, but no one said to open a thread because if you open this deal, it will be hard to close. This is a problem.

You can do a rotation under an existing agreement, very quickly, in a few days, it is not a problem to do this rotation and between those who signed the agreement, so PSD and PNL, it can be discussed that this is their work. I do not interfere in this discussion, it is not my business,” explained Kelemen Hunor.

He said that in 2021 he asked to involve UDMR in the contract, but, he says, “it didn’t work out, I didn’t want to.”

“I told them to agree on the three of them. It was not possible, they did not want to

“If you want to involve me as well, then everything that means understanding on the rotation opens and it will be very difficult to close. This brings more unnecessary complications than if you go by what you signed up for.

I don’t want to give anyone advice on how to do it, especially since it’s an agreement between them. First, in 2021, we told them to make a tripartite agreement. It was not possible, they did not want to. They had arguments.

I accepted and said you will. If they didn’t want it then, why do they want it now? This agreement does not apply to us. And nothing has changed in the sense that there will be fewer of us, there will be more of them, or on the contrary, something will change in this perspective of changing positions in the coalition or in the government.

From my point of view, everything is simple. They can get complicated very quickly, within 24 hours. I’m not saying it’s not, but as long as I’m saying it’s easy, there’s an agreement. If they stick to the agreement, the rotation happens very quickly,” Kelemen Hunor emphasized.

“On June 20, we will have a new Executive Team”

When asked whether we will have a new government in a month, the UDMR leader replied that we will have the same government with the same prime minister.

“On May 20, we will have the same government with the same prime minister. On June 20, we will have a new government. If the agreements are followed, everything is simple. If the agreement and all negotiations are resumed, then everything must be discussed. But at this moment, no one from the leadership of the PNL, and here I mean the president of the PNL, did not come to say that this agreement is no longer valid,” explained Kelemen Hunor.

The fastest calendar for the rotation of the government begins only on May 26, says the president of the UDMR.

“The procedure begins on May 26 – as stipulated in the agreement – and until May 30-31 you can vote in the parliament and take the oath,” said Kelemen Hunor.

When asked whether Marcel Čolaku will become the new prime minister, the president of the UDMR clarified that “it is logical and natural.”

“If he proposes PSD, and it is logical and natural, then of course he will,” said Kelemen Hunor.
